Norðoya Bú- og Heimatænasta

The administration of the Home Care and Elderly Care was established on January 1. 2015, with Løgting Act No. 20 transferred from the country to the municipalities to administrate.

The municipalities of the Northern Islands have agreed on an equal cooperation on home care and care for the elderly.

Norðoya Bú- og Heimatænasta (The nursing home and home help service of the northern islands), NBH, manages the Home Service and the elderly area in the Northern Islands.

The services are organized according to Løgting Act No 19. of April 7. 2014 on Home Services, Elderly care etc. as last amended by Løgting Act No. 159 of December 10. 2021.

NBH provides a coordinated overall service to citizens in need. The purpose of the services is to prevent illness, stimulate the mental and physical health and well-being of the citizen, redevelop lost mobility, stimulate the individual's ability to fend for himself, and provide care and attention.

When the elder area was transferred to municipalities for administration, the Board of Directors of NBH decided not to make major changes to the area immediately. The Board, on the other hand, set out to devote the early days to extensive and in-depth studies of the area, so a solid basis would be provided for the development of a strategy for NBH's future activities.

The research began with dialogue meetings where users, relatives, staff and other collaborating trade groups were given the opportunity to express their views on existing services and how these can be better organized in the future. A desire for greater flexibility in the services was a common thread in the dialogue sessions hosted by psychologist Suni Poulsen.
The analytics firm “Lóður” then organized an elaborate questionnaire on contentment in which the eligible users, relatives representing each user and all employees, were asked. The results of this survey can be seen here.

The surveys revealed some shared values that matter to users, relatives, and employees. These are:

  • Presence
  • Flexibility
  • Trust, rather than control

Based on the research and the values mentioned above, this vision has been formulated for NBH:

  • NBH strives to create multifarious opportunities for presence, to benefit senior citizens, relatives, and employees.
  • NBH will prioritize flexibility and co-creation in the solutions that will be found in the field of care for the elderly in the future.
  • The premise is an evocative field that is based on trust, high professional standards, and respect.

In the summer of 2016, the Board of Directors of NBH agreed on a new strategy for NBH's future operations. The strategy is based on the results of extensive research. A pamphlet has been delivered to all families in the Northern Islands, outlining NBH's future plans.

NBH's logo was unveiled on February 27, 2015. Designer Sonja Kjølbro has created the logo as a result of a logo competition. Sólgerð Vang, head of department at the “Sambýlið á Heygnum”, won the competition. Explanation of the logo can be found here.
